Things You Should Not Say!
Believe it or not what you say during a wedding speech can have an impact on the evening. If you get up there and deliver a heartfelt speech that is touching, the bride and groom will forever remember what you had to say. However, completely bombing the speech can have just as much an impact at the reception. For this reason, here are six things to avoid saying and doing in order to create a good wedding speech.
1. Profane language
It is vital you understand the audience you are talking to. More than likely there will be children in the crowd making it imperative you avoid using any profanity whatsoever. There are a number of ways to tell a good story without cursing or including adult language.
2. Inappropriate stories
Along with avoiding poor language, it is equally important you avoid telling any inappropriate stories. No good wedding speech has ever included talking about the bachelor party in detail or sharing a moment you spent at the strip club with the groom. Whether you intend on telling sentimental stories or funny stories, keep them clean.
3. Ex's
The wedding is a day where it is all about the bride and groom. There is no room for ex's to be brought up in the speech whatsoever. Regardless of whether it was an ex husband or wife or an ex boyfriend or girlfriend, avoid mentioning any names or stories that have to do with them. Every story and joke you tell should be about the bride, groom and your relationship with them.
4. Uncomfortable jokes
Including jokes throughout can be a terrific way to create a good wedding speech. It keeps the mood light and the speech entertaining. Just make sure if you are going to poke fun at the bride or groom it does not embarrass them too much. This is their day to shine and the last thing they need is to deal with an inappropriate joke.
5. Chew gum or eat during
When presenting your speech, you want to speak as clearly as possible. It is natural to be nervous and even stutter or mess a word up here and there. However, there is no excuse for chewing gum or having a mouthful of cake during your speech. Stand up straight, take a deep breath, and speak as clearly as possible.
6. Drink too much
The last thing you must avoid in order to present a good wedding speech is drinking too much. Almost every wedding has loads of alcohol to take advantage of, but keep it for after your speech. If a glass of wine will help ease the nerves, go ahead. But keep the drinking to no more than two glasses.
